Claude Opus is a large general model: it often writes fluent IELTS Task 2 prose while under-calling Task Response, and it cannot issue an official band. That is a different failure than Haiku’s speed-and-praise pattern. Opus will happily keep a memorized introduction if the grammar is clean. Paste the prompt every time, ask for quoted TR/CC/LR/GRA, and score an unaided timed draft. Do not treat an Opus “Band 8” as a result.

What Opus is optimised for
Opus-class models favour careful, long-form helpfulness. Helpfulness inflates scores on essays that sound academic. IELTS Writing needs a cold match to the question verbs, including when the prose is already pretty.
