Direct answer

The difference between Band 5 and Band 6 in IELTS Writing is control and development, not advanced vocabulary. At Band 5, ideas are relevant but under-developed, paragraphing can be unclear and grammar or word-choice errors often make the reader work. At Band 6, the position is clear even if not fully extended, ideas are organised with some effective linking, and errors still occur but rarely block meaning. Moving up usually means developing each main idea with an explanation and an example, and cutting repeated grammar errors.
