Word-Limit Traps in IELTS Writing: Under-Length, Padding, and Off-Prompt Stretching
150 / 250 · Padding · May 2026
In Band9AI first-party platform telemetry (see methodology), writing candidates flagged at Band 5–6 most often leak marks through task response under-development in Writing Task 2. This is an observational practice metric, not a controlled trial or guaranteed official IELTS lift. Verification methodology

The word-limit trap is either stopping under 150/250 so the task is incomplete, or stretching with dummy sentences and repeated examples so Coherence dies while the count looks safe. Official papers set Task 1 at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250. More words do not raise TR if they are off-prompt. Count during practice; do not spend test time numbering every line.

Minima vs quality
Under-length scripts often under-develop. Over-length scripts often wander. Examiners are not a word processor, but development and coverage correlate with hitting the minimum without padding.
Under, pad, wander
| Pattern | What goes wrong | Correct move |
|---|---|---|
| Under-length | No overview / one body | Plan two bodies + close |
| Pad | Repeated synonyms of the same claim | Add a limit or a reason, not an echo |
| Wander | A third topic to chase 250 | Stay inside the stance |
Hit the minimum with development, not fog
1. Know 150/250 as floors
Task 1 / Task 2.
2. In practice, count once per task until you can feel length
Do not obsess on test day.
3. If short, add a reason or a comparison — not an epoch sentence
That is TR/TA, not decoration.
4. If long and messy, cut the third example
See example-overload.
Key takeaways: Word-Limit Traps in IELTS Writing
- 150 and 250 are floors, not targets for padding.
- Under-length often means missing parts of the task.
- Extra off-prompt words do not raise TR.
- This is Writing, not a Reading short-answer limit — different paper.
