IELTS Writing Vocabulary Myth: Why 'Advanced Words' Don't Raise Your Score
Many candidates believe that rare, advanced words are the key to a high Writing score. They are not. Examiners reward vocabulary that is precise, accurate and natural. Using a difficult word in the wrong place can lower your band, while simple words used well can raise it.
Lexical Resource Misunderstood
Lexical Resource is often misread as "use advanced words". In fact, it measures the range of your vocabulary, how accurately you use it, and how naturally you combine words.
What Lexical Resource Actually Assesses
Examiners check whether your words suit the task, whether they mean what you intend, whether you avoid repeating yourself, and whether you use natural word combinations, called collocations. Difficulty alone earns nothing.
Why Advanced Words Don't Raise Scores
A rare word only helps if it is the most precise choice. If it is slightly wrong, it counts as an error. If it is too formal for the sentence, it sounds forced, and examiners notice.
Inappropriate Use Example
Forced: "Technology has revolutionised the paradigm of education." The words sound impressive but say very little.
Better: "Technology has changed how students learn, from online lectures to instant feedback on homework." This is clear and specific.
Collocations Matter More Than Rare Words
Collocations are words that naturally go together. Using them correctly shows real control of English, which is exactly what higher bands describe.
Collocation Examples
"make a decision" (not "do a decision"), "take action" (not "make action"), "pose a risk", "a sharp increase", "meet a deadline". These sound natural to an examiner, and getting them wrong counts as an error.
Why Collocations Matter
Correct collocations make your writing sound natural, show that you can use words with control, and help you avoid small errors that pull your score down. They matter for every band above 6.
Why Memorised Phrases Backfire
Learned phrases often do not fit the question, appear in thousands of other essays and show the examiner that you are not writing in your own words. Examiners are trained to spot them and do not give them credit.
Memorised Phrase Example
Memorised: "In this day and age, it is widely believed that..."
Better: "Many people believe that..." or simply state the topic directly.
Why Examiners Notice Memorised Phrases
They see the same openings and closings in essay after essay. When a phrase does not match the topic, it is obvious that it was prepared in advance.
Band 6 vs Band 8 Vocabulary Use
A Band 6 essay usually repeats basic words, makes some word-choice and collocation errors and may rely on memorised phrases. A Band 8 essay uses a wide range of words accurately, combines them naturally and makes only occasional slips.
Band 6 Characteristics
The same words repeated, a limited range, noticeable errors in word choice and prepared phrases that do not quite fit.
Band 8 Characteristics
Varied and precise words, natural collocations, very few errors and less common words used only where they add meaning.
What Actually Raises Vocabulary Scores
Precise words for the task, accurate use, variety without repetition and natural collocations. All four can be improved with practice.
Strategy 1: Choose the Precise Word
Ask whether a word says exactly what you mean. Use words you can use correctly, and replace vague words like "good" or "things" with specific ones.
Strategy 2: Learn Collocations
When you learn a new word, learn the words it is usually used with. Note them in short phrases, not as single words.
Strategy 3: Write in Your Own Words
Drop prepared openings and closings. Answer the question directly in clear, natural sentences.
Practice and Feedback
It is hard to spot your own forced words and collocation errors. Feedback on real essays shows you which words did not work and why.
AI feedback can flag misused words, unnatural combinations and memorised phrases in your writing, so you know what to change.
Conclusion: The Vocabulary Myth
Advanced words do not guarantee a high score. Precise, accurate and natural vocabulary does. Focus on collocations, write in your own words and use only the words you can control.
